Shank - Somthing From Nothing - U1-2012-2
Shank - Soundtrack - U1-2028-2
"Shank... made the best use of the new technology I saw at
the festival" (Douglas Wolk, The Village Voice, June 1999)
Thirty months ago, the Berlin based instrumental group SHANK
attracted such attention with their first CD ("Something From Nothing",
united One. Records U1-2012-2) that they were invited to partake in the
Berlin Jazzfest programme and to perform at the 1999 Bell Atlantic Jazz
Festival in New York. During their concert in June at the Knitting Factory
they successfully befriended the jazz spoilt New York audience (see above
quote). Unfortunately for SHANK, homesickness set in for American Tom
Ralls and shortly after his return to Berlin he packed his trombone for
Los Angeles and said Auf Wiedersehen to Berlin...
During
April 2000, SHANK presented their new line up with guitarist Michael Rodach
and trumpet player Martin Klingeberg to Berlin audiences. Together with
previous members Andreas Weiser (perc), Andreas Advocado (bg) and Matthias
Trippner (dr), they had consistantly developed the musical concept of
SHANK - Cosmic Funk forged Cosmic Drum īnī Bass. SHANK became more estranged
from pure Funk, heading in an atmospheric and trance-like direction. Now
the groove is embedded, melting in the music, overlapped by suspense filled
melodic and harmonic lines contributed mostly by Martin Klingeberg's trumpet
filtered through effects and Michael Rodach's electric guitar. Additionally
SHANK play and manipulate tapes of radio gameshows as effects.
In summer 2001 Sebastian Demmin (keyb, sampler) did join Shank.
Unfortunalety he is not on their latest CD, but probably more will come...
Berlin's top Jazz-club Quasimodo was the perfect place to
develop a new concept. Their second CD "Soundtrack" was recorded there
on May 21, 2000. With no cuts or overdubs and just a small chaser of atmospheric
ambient sounds to heighten the live character, the chosen tracks from
this concert are as live as live is. Produced, compiled and mixed by Andreas
Weiser, SHANK'S "Soundtrack" is out now.
