KANENHI:IO - Good Seeds - U1CD 2030-2
"...album to hear!" (The Toronto Star) KANENHI:IO (speak: ganaheo) is a group of five First Nations women from the reserve of Wahta Mohawk Territory in Ontario, Canada. The members represent several First Nations peoples and include Innu, Potawatomi, Mohawk, and Cree nations. Kanenhi:io follow and share the teachings of the Red Path; the traditional ways and teachings of the Creator.
The women sing harmonies, ancient chants and rounds using Iroquoian water drum accompanied by cow horn shakers. The water drum, exclusive to the Mohawk people, is symbolic of life and existence. The deer hide represents the four legged animals, the base of the drum, a hollowed out tree, represents the life of trees and plants, the circle ring, holding the hide to the base, represents the people in unity and the warm water placed inside the drum producing the tone, represents blood thus giving the drum life. The cow horn shakers are individual as some may have pebbles inside and some have seeds giving the possibility of planting.
