Embryo - Live In Berlin - U1CD-2015-2
Something for everyone - every fan will be satisfied with what they are getting.
The band is totally in their element, totally crazed to play, and offers
the quintessence of their history. (Artos 09/98)
Thirty years ago, thirty long plays, one TV-film, and five thousand concerts
in four continents; with over three hundred and fifty musicians in addition
to the drummer, vibraphonplayer, percussionist, composer, producer, hobby-musical
ethnologist and bandleader Christian Burchard: all of these elements and
people built the project Embryo in Munich. Today, Embryo is an institution
in Worldmusic. Musicians like Trilok Gurtu, Ramesh Shotam, Mal Waldron, Roman
Bunka, Siggi Schwab, Charlie Mariano, the Dissidenten...all refer to their
successful co-operation with Burchard.
At the end of the 80's, Embryo gave concerts with the Yoruba Dun Dun Orchestra
(Nigeria) and El Hussaine Kili (Morocco) throughout Europe. Besides Christian
Burchard, Chris Karrer (sax, g, vio, perc / Ex-Amon Düül II), Michael
Wehmeyer (keyb, perc / now Rahala) and Dieter Serfas (dr, perc), were the
live-line up of Embryo. In June 1989, a short time before the Berlin Wall
Crash, the Rundfunk der DDR recorded a concert of Embryo at the
Friedrichstadtpalast, Berlin. One year later, the East-German record-company,
AMIGA, released a record with parts of that concert. Although the record
was only on the market a short time, it recieved very good reviews. E.g.
the Jazzthetik called the record "the best Embryo-LP till now" (10/90).
Consequently, the LP is very much in demand. By courtesy of BMG Musik Berlin
GmbH, we released this record as a CD. The concert was divided into three
parts: a Moroccan session with El Hussaine Kili, a ritual-music session of
the Yoruba with the Yoruba Dun Dun Orchestra, and an inter-cultural session.
The CD has samples from all three diverse sessions of music.
