Luba Dvorak - Parts for Sale - U1CD-2038-2
Luba Dvorak isn’t exactly the kind of name that conjures images of Americana but this Czech born singer/songwriter has taken some of the finest sources of roots and contemporary American music and put them together on his solo debut “Parts for Sale”.

The son of a blacksmith father and factory-working mother emigrated from the former Czechoslovakia with his parents and brother and the age of six. Not being able to tell their friends and family that they would not return from their “vacation” was an emotional decision. Erasing stamps in their passports the family was able to cross the Austrian border and claim refugee status. Luba attended first grade there and after a year and a half the family finally settled in Vancouver Canada. Music was always in the family. Luba’s father was a well respected musician in the Czech Republic and the weekly gathering of musicians and singing of Czech folk songs had quite an impact on the young Dvorak. A few steps down the family tree will also find world-renowned classical composer Antonin Dvorak.

“ I remember my dad playing guitar every night at home and on the weekends there was always a gathering of people singing and playing. On our many camping trips, he would play everything from Elvis to Doc Watson in the car, and the first concert he took me to was Willie Nelson. So I guess a lot of that stuff rubbed off on me.”

Picking up the guitar seriously at the age of twelve, things began to move rather quickly and although a quite introvert, Luba’s performer personality began to shine from the first moment he was able to get on a stage.
By fifteen he was playing around Vancouver with various high school bands. Spending his twenties flying around the world being a sideman guitarist and fronting his own band “Big Rig Sweeties”, Dvorak had five indie releases under his belt, licensed music to video games and TV shows, as well as a top 40 hit in the Czech Republic.
2003 would see him release his first solo recording “Parts for Sale” which is an eclectic collection of songs that range from full band arrangements such as “Amsterdam” to stripped down numbers such as “Unguarded”. The songs were mostly written on the road and recorded in Vancouver the “old fashion” way, live off the floor to analogue tape. Featuring drummer Kenny Aronoff (John Mellencamp, Melissa Etheridge) the songs conjure up comparisons to songwriters such as Tom Waits, Neil Young and Bruce Springsteen and find Luba focusing his songwriting on a relatable Americana/alt-folk genre. These heartfelt songs find him winning over audiences worldwide. Currently living in New York City Luba continues to tour and is working on a follow up to “Parts for Sale” scheduled for a fall 2006 release.

“Dvorak has the rare talent of drawing listeners into his world and keeping them hanging on every word. These songs are like a fine wine, they get better with age.” The Vancouver Sun

“Luba has the making of a truly great songwriter” Toronto Star

“tight, uncluttered, lively performance … a truly entertaining record” Austin Chronicle
